When I first looked at the DHMO website, I didn't know it was water. I thought it was a really bad chemical that was ruining the environment and peoples lives. When I found out that DHMO was just H2O, which is in other words water, I was really surprised and I felt a little stupid... Well I wouldn't blame myself for it because I haven't taken chemistry yet! :)
I think this will change the way I use information online by making me take several opinions and really research what I'm looking for more deeply and I think I will want to know exactly what I'm doing and if my information is accurate or not before I use any information off of the internet ever again. This lesson that I learnt today has made me realize what not knowing the exact information about something can lead to. Thinking water is a bad chemical... Really? Am I that bad of a researcher? I don't always look at multiple websites before turning in a research project or any other project that requires information...should I start doing so?
I have found out that not all the information that you find online will be the most accurate so always make sure you have the most accurate information before using it for anything. I think I'm going to start checking my information more to see if it's accurate rather than just basically thinking it's accurate and just turning it in or publishing it! :)

Well said, Shezlin! That is exactly what I wanted you to learn from this exercise! Shannon - yes, DHMO causes soil erosion, is part of acid rain, is instrumental in brake failures, and a host of other "problems." Thinkf of floods, for instance. They are caused by DHMO, right? But the point of the website was to trick its readers into being scared about this "harmful chemical." They succeeded quite well, didn't they? But we worked on this in class to help us learn to be more careful about our sources and about what we read online. We don't want to be duped, right?
ReplyDeleteTomorrow we will talk about how to identify accurate information online. It's not easy, but it's also not impossible. This exercise was meant to do just what it did: help you all see the need to be accurate and careful in your online research!
Great job! You express yourself in a way that is east to understand, and I didn't get lost in any part of your blog while reading it. Awesome!
